Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, 189 United Nations member states agreed on eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) meant to help lift the world’s poorest countries out of extreme poverty by the year 2015. A specific call was made in the sixth goal, MDG 6, “to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.” To honor its commitment to the MDGs, the United States has shown global leadership by increasing access to medicines to treat the seven most common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).  Treating NTDs can also impact other MDGs, including:

MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

MDG 2: Achieve universal primary education

MDG 4: Reduce child mortality

MDG 5: Improve maternal health
