Neglected Tropical Diseases Disproportionately Affect Catholic-Majority Countries

"Nearly one quarter of the world’s most serious neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and 100 percent of Chagas disease occur in the Catholic-majority countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, a finding highlighted in an editorial published on April 26th in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

A Call to Action: Deworming Needs in Latin America and the Caribbean

Washington, D.C. – A new report released today by the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, an initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, highlights theimpact that a small group of neglected diseases are having on children in the Americas and presents concrete policy recommendations that can lead to significant progress in achieving several Millennium Development Goals in the Americas by 2015.

THE SABIN VACCINE INSTITUTE MOURNS THE PASSING OF FOUNDING CHAIRMAN DR. HERMAN R. SHEPHERD

 

Washington, D.C. – March 30, 2011 – Herman R. Shepherd built a legacy around developing innovative medical technologies and reducing human suffering from vaccine preventable and neglected tropical diseases. A pioneer in aerosol technologies and the founding chairman of The Albert B. Sabin Vaccine Institute, Dr. Shepherd died peacefully on March 28, 2011 from complications caused by pneumonia. He was 89 years old.

The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases Partners with Eisai Co., Ltd.

March 15, 2011- The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Eisai Co., Ltd to provide advocacy support for Eisai’s diethylcarbamazine (generic name, “DEC”) donation to the World Health Organization (WHO). This donation is a significant contribution to the global neglected tropical disease (NTD) response and will expand the pharmaceutical industry’s role in global health initiatives to combat NTDs.
